England's Rob Moore might have thought he'd scored the winning goal on his 100th England appearance against the World's number one side today but Germany responded to secure a 4-4 draw in what was a thrilling hockey spectacle at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen. Despite letting slip a two goal lead in the dying moments of the game the draw keeps England top of the Pool A table going into their final pool match against Belgium on Wednesday.

Ashley Jackson gave England the perfect start against the reigning World and Olympic Champions when he smashed an effort low to the German goalkeeper's right hand side just four minutes in although England would lose him to injury later in the half.

Throughout the half both teams played exciting, fast paced hockey and it was Germany who scored next through the clinical Christopher Zeller three minutes before half time.

If that setback was disappointing to England what happened one minute into the second half was twice as disappointing when they went behind to a Mortiz Fuerste penalty stroke. A move into the England circle had found a German player in front of goal but as he made a challenge Beeston defender Ali Wilson was adjudged to have fouled his opponent and Fuerste stepped up to fire home the resultant penalty.

Captain Barry Middleton, who scored twice against Austria on Sunday, netted another brace against Germany in some style, scoring twice in two minutes to turn the game again. After scoring from open play in the 40th minute, he was then quickest to react to the rebounding ball at a 42 minute penalty corner, knocking home to make it 3-2 to England.

The game was still being played at an exhilarating pace and Rob Moore (pictured right), playing in his 100th international match for England, got his fairytale moment as he scored to put England 4-2 up.

After going off injured in the first half Ashley Jackson returned in the second period but he could do nothing about Zeller's goal with 12 minutes remaining, which put Germany right back in contention.

Into the final ten minutes and England were desperate to hold on for the victory. They were dealt a blow with just three minutes remaining when Moore was shown a yellow card, forcing him to watch what remained of the match from the sidelines and a minute later Christopher Wesley equalised for Germany; 4-4 the final score after a breath-taking game.

After the match, Manager Peter Nicholson was philosophical about the result, despite losing the two goals late on. "It was a great match - a superb advert for hockey. We're obviously a bit disappointed not to see the game out but it was actually still a good result for us, especially with Belgium only scoring three against Austria earlier."

The point won keeps England top of Pool A, ahead of Germany on goal difference and a point ahead of their opponents on Wednesday Belgium. For their part, Austria remain at the foot of the group after their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium. England play Belgium at 13:30 local time (12:30BST) on Wednesday.

Ireland struggled in their opening EuroHockey Nations Championship game as they lost to reigning champions Germany 7-0 earlier today in Amsterdam.

In the context of Gene Muller's aim of maintaining 'A division' status, the result may ultimately prove immaterial but the manner of defeat may cause him some headaches ahead of tomorrow's vital fixture against Scotland.

He said after the game that playing a top side like Germany in peak form was always likely to be a major challenge for his young charges:

"It was a difficult assignment playing a German side who have been in a medal match in every major competition for a long time. There was a major quality difference, but not only that, they played very well. We need to recognise that fact once an opposition like that, it becomes a bit of damage control."

"It is a bit of a shock to play against a side like this, especially if you have a young team and you have to be aware this is part of the team's education. It's not the end for Irish hockey but a continual building for the future. Disappointed, but you have to take your medicine sometimes."

"What we take from the game is that we were able to change, especially our intensity, in the second half. We were too timid in the first half, so our challenge now is to start with that physical intensity against Scotland."

Goal from Anke Kuhn, Natascha Keller and Fanny Rinne gave Germany a 3-0 half-time lead before two well-taken strikes from Maike Stockel and corner strikes from Rinne and Julia Muller completed the scoring.

Ireland improved in the second half, showing more bite in the tackle and won two penalty corners but were unable to make a dent in the deficit.

Muller must now lift his charges quickly for an early start on Sunday against the Scots.

'The Scotland game is a critical game for us, it was always going to be. Staying up, that's the premier objective. After that, even a point against Scotland and we may have a chance of playing for a World Cup place against Spain. By the end of tomorrow, the objective is still to be in the tournament.'

Edinburgh will host 2011 Golden Oldies

Edinburgh will host the 15th Air New Zealand Golden Oldies World Hockey Festival in 2011, the first time that the event has been staged in Scotland.

The Festival was announced in Scotland's capital today, secured for Edinburgh through a partnership of Event Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council.

The eighty-three year old president of Scotland's LX hockey team, George Black, announced the destination for the 2011 Festival today in Edinburgh along with current Scottish representative, Graham Moodie.

The 2011 Golden Oldies World Hockey Festival will be only the third time that the event has been staged in Great Britain since its inception in 1983, following Bournemouth, England in 1989 and Dublin, Ireland in 1997.

Organisers expect up to 1000 participants from up to 10 countries to travel to Edinburgh.

The 14th Festival will be held in Adelaide, South Australia next month from 20-27 September with organisers Air New Zealand confident of the success
for the 2011 Festival.

"We are delighted to stage the 2011 Festival in Edinburgh, which is both a stronghold for the sport and also an outstanding city for Golden Oldies hockey players to enjoy the legendary Fun, Friendship and Fraternity," said Keith Robinson, Air New Zealand Events Manager.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland, said: "In 2008 Edinburgh hosted the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival which was a phenomenal success for the city, attracting rugby fans from around the world. Hosting the World Hockey Festival in 2011 will, without doubt, build upon this success, generating an estimated economic impact of over 1 million for the city of Edinburgh from the participants, spectators, family and friends who will come to enjoy the sport and spend time here in Scotland as tourists. The Festival will also raise awareness of Hockey as a sport which has wide appeal across all age groups and encourage participation from teams based in the UK as well as overseas putting Scotland firmly on the map as a destination for social sporting events as well as competitive ones.

"The city of Edinburgh provides an enviable backdrop for any event and the Golden Oldies World Hockey Festival will take place just before the height of the city's festival season to entice attendees to take some time to explore the city, soak up the atmosphere and perhaps travel further in Scotland during their time here."

Lee Cousins, President of Scottish Hockey Union, the organisation responsible for delivering the event, will take on the role of Festival Director.

"Scottish Hockey is delighted to be involved in this world class Festival which promotes two very important sides of the sport: the focus on friendship and fraternity and the fact that it is a sport which is accessible to all ages and abilities."

The Festival will be staged at Peffermill, close to the city CBD, which Cousins says is a world class venue which will provide some great play and fantastic facilities.

"Securing events like this one for the city of Edinburgh is hugely important in raising the profile of the sport as an inclusive and fun way to keep fit and enjoy the more sociable aspects of competitive sports," said Scottish Olympic representative Graham Moodie.

George Black, 83, said he was delighted that like-minded Golden Oldies will be thronging to Edinburgh in 2011.

"I've been playing hockey for 63 years now and, as president of Scotland's LX Club for players aged 65 and over, I can vouch for the fact that you don't have to be in your twenties to enjoy a game or two. Events like the Golden Oldies Hockey Festival provide a means for people from around the world with a passion for hockey and indeed travel to come together and enjoy a week of sport and socialising and Scotland's LX team will be looking forward to participating in both."

The Golden Oldies World Hockey Festival began in Auckland in 1983 and has been staged on a biennial basis since with Festivals staged in Canada, Australia, England, Fiji, Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands and Argentina.

NE14HOCKEY – Making Field Hockey look great!!

NE14HOCKEY New DesignNE14HOCKEY New Design

NE14HOCKEY has been redesigned yet again. It's hard to say its very different from the previous (current) design because it took longer to design than it has to implement it but it is quite different in terms of style/appearance. We also intend to make the homepages for the PC Game and the World Record attempt more interesting over the coming week so they have their own sense of self and aren't just different because of the content they carry.

We will also be releasing a new profile box for our facebook application in line with the new look of the homepage.

Scotland ready for a stern test

Scotland's senior women feel "prepared and confident" for the EuroHockey Nations Championships starting this weekend at Wagener Stadium in Amsterdam after holding their own against world top teams Germany and Spain recently.

"We're prepared and confident after a successful build up programme and recent good performances against Spain, who are ranked seventh in the world, and Germany, who are third," said Scotland manager Lynne Dick.

Scotland drew 0-0 and lost 2-0 against a fully fit German squad in Hannover the first weekend in August, following two test matches against Spain in late July where they lost 4-2 and 5-1, with the latter score not reflecting the balance of play.

Given Germany and Spain's mentioned world rankings, and Scotland's ranking of 22nd, recent results are promising. But Scotland has their work cut out for them as they not only sit in pool B alongside Spain and Germany at the Championships but also, number 15 in the world, Ireland.

Lynne Dick added: "We're pleased with our results, but Germany and Spain are exceptionally good teams and deserve respect-so we're certainly not going to get overconfident. We'll take lessons from these matches and play our best on the day. The first two matches against Spain and Ireland will be crucial."

Having faced Ireland a total of 128 times with 45 wins, 35 draws and 48 loses, the second match of the tournament should be close. The two Celtic nations historically give each other a tough challenge.

Tough competitors also sit in Pool A, including, world number one, the Netherlands, England, Azerbaijan and Russia. Scotland sit in the underdog's position, but with the top four teams from the event receiving automatic qualification to the World Cup they have plenty to fight for.

Scotland's European campaign pushes back 22nd August against Spain, followed by Ireland on the 23rd, both with a 9:30am start, then Germany on the 25th at 15:30 before cross over matches on the 27th and finals on the 29th.
