In the last of their power pool matches New Zealand beat South Africa 3:2. South Africa took the lead in the first half against the run of play just before half time. New Zealand dominated for long periods creating several clear scoring opportunities and were rewarded with a field goal by Gemma Flynn in the 44th minute, followed closely by a penalty corner goal from Bridget Blackwood giving New Zealand the lead. This lead was short lived, with South Africa equalizing five minutes later with a fortuitous goal. New Zealand played their best hockey in the last 15 minutes of the game, resulting a superbly taken reverse stick goal from Ella Gunson with three minutes to go. The New Zealand team repelled a last minute South African penalty corner to win the match. They now play India for 9th place on Saturday at 2pm Boston time. Coach Chris Leslie "felt that the team had a much improved team performance from the previous match and now looks forward to finishing the tournament on a positive note by beating a very competitive Indian side".
