New Zealand NHL Round 3 Results

Canterbury lead the Men’s points table after three rounds, with Auckland currently just edged out of the top four. Auckland and Wellington battled out a 5 – 5 draw, after the Wellingtonians clawed their way back from a 4 – 2 half time deficit. Wellington even hit the lead with a little over 10 minutes to play when Jason Hilton scored from the field, but Simon Child’s solo effort from a penalty corner variation drew the scores level two minutes later. Northland Men notched up their first win with a satisfying 2 – 0 victory over Southern. Sam Bartholomew converted a penalty stroke and a corner. Canterbury had an unexpectedly comfortable win over North Harbour, hammering in four goals in the second half for a 5-1 victory. Harbour missed the defensive qualities of defender Blair Hopping who was unavailable. Hayden Shaw scored twice to become the leading Men’s goalscorer with five goals. Midlands romped in 9 – 0 over Central, Junior Black Stick Hugo Inglis picked up a hat trick.

Midlands Women continued their unbeaten run with a 3 – 1 win over luckless Northland who are yet to win a game, despite playing some good hockey. The young Northland side has fantastic strike power but are being given too few opportunities up front. Midlands now lead the Women’s points table and are looking the most consistently dangerous. Wellington Women continued their good weekend with a 4 – 0 win over Southland. North Harbour also continued their consistence performances downing a lacklustre Canterbury 3 – 0. Auckland recorded their first win of the competition with a spirited 1 – 0 win over Central. Krystal Forgesson was the goal scorer, from a penalty corner variation.
