New Zealand NHL Round 2 Results

In the Women's competition Central emerged as an early title contender with a well earned 3 - 1 win over defending champions North Harbour. Midlands also confirmed themselves as a class act with the biggest win of the day, a 10 - 0 drubbing of Southland to follow on from their Round One win over Auckland. Gemma Flynn scored a hat trick. Canterbury snuck home in the final minute of the match against Northland, converting a direct penalty corner strike with seconds to go, for a 2 - 1 win. Auckland found themselves 4 - 0 down to Wellington by half -time. The talented-filled Auckland side is yet to gel. For Wellington former the experience of Black Sticks Niniwa Roberts and Suzie Muirhead added to the performance. Current Black Sticks Anita Punt and keeper Beth Jurgeleit also played well during the 4 - 1 win.

In the Men's competition, defending champions Midlands stumbled against Wellington going down 2 - 1. Black Sticks keeper Kyle Pontifex made several good saves late in the game to protect Wellington's lead. North Harbour chalked up another big win, with a 6 - 1 victory over Southern, taking their haul to 12 goals in two rounds. Dave Kosoof is their current leading goal scoring with three. Northland keeper Greg Paynter made some good saves to keep a clean goal in the first half against Auckland. Auckland couldn't break the deadlock until the 43rd minute when Steven O'Connor eased the tension with a well taken field goal. Auckland added a further two goals for a 3 - 0. Canterbury came back from a 1 - 0 half time deficit against Central to take out the match 3 - 1.
