City of Peterborough 1 2 v 0 Dereham 1 2009-10-31 14:00

Goal Scorers: Shayne Andrews & Simon Shorter
CoP continue their East Premier A league campaign this weekend at home to Dereham with a well deserved win. CoP dominated the game from the start, but could not score past a well organised Dereham defence. CoP's hockey was not as free flowing as last weekend against Ipswich and a number of clear cut opportunities were missed, but also Dereham only created one opportunity at a short-corner which was well saved by last season's 6th XI keeper Jake Ledbrook in the CoP goal. The first half finished 0-0.
CoP again dominated the second half, but could have wasted their territorial advantage as Dereham managed a couple of breaks which caught CoP short at the back and were grateful for their Man of Match, Ledbrook, to keep them in the game. It was not until a short corner with ten minutes to go that the stalemate was broken. An option short-corner slipped to Shayne Andrews was dispatched to move CoP 1-0 up. This signalled the start of further pressure for CoP and a further goal from a run from the 25 yard line and shot past the Dereham keeper from Captain Simon Shorter. A Dereham attack towards the end of full time brought a desperate tackle from Paul Hillsdon, which led to a yellow card and the remainder of the game on the sidelines. Dereham were unable to convert the resultant corner and CoP finished the game as victors.
Shane Vincent put in his usual hard working display on his last appearance before going off to "join the army". Not an impressive display, but a deserved three points with CoP now up sneaking into 4th place in the table on goal difference.
Cambridge City 1 9 v 0 City of Peterborough 2 2009-10-31 14:00

This was another heavy defeat for a City side that should have done better with the personnel available to them. 4 - 0 down after 7 minutes translated into 7 - 0 down at half time and therefore on the face of it there was an improved second half display. It seemed too many players went "walkabout" when the going got tough and if you only have 4 or 5 playing to their standards of ability and commitment then more such results are likely. The real test will be if the side can bounce back next week at home against Harpenden who are just above them in the league.

Goal Scorers: Wayne Humphreys
City returned from Cambridge more than a little annoyed that they had not got something out of the game and thereby losing their unbeaten league record. The critical moment may have been a goalkeeping misjudgement when Michael Green let a shot in thinking it had been struck from outside of the circle. However City had enough play to have secured a point. Tom Wadsworth was considered to be the man of the match in an otherwise lack lustre display.
City of Peterborough 4 4 v 6 Spalding 1 2009-10-31 14:00

Goal Scorers: Rob Lavies (2), Rob Harrison & Tom Handley
This is the sort of match to bring the crowds back but generally the standard of defending contributed to the large number of goals. After City had taken an early lead following a short corner, Spalding took over with some fast attacks orchestrated by their experienced players, Michael Morris and Dave Burrell and were soon in the lead only to be pegged back to 2 - 2 before scoring two fine goals to lead 4-2 at half time. The game continued to be fiercely competitive and end to end in the second half with the goalkeepers in regular action but Spalding always seemed capable of scoring another if City managed one themselves. Spalding go top of the table after this result with City losing their unbeaten tag and slipping to 4th place. For City, Kyle Doyle again put in another impressive performance in attack.

Goal Scorers: Iain Green (2) & Simon Buckley
Captain Neil Webb was very pleased with his troops as they recorded their first win of the season with nearly fit again Iain Green scoring twice. His partnership with Simon Buckley, who scored the other goal, should be good enough to keep the 5th XI in this division, especially as the younger players are gradually acclimatising to playing at this level.
City of Peterborough 6 1 v 3 Rutland 2 2009-10-31 14:00

Goal Scorers: Matt Wallace
City are still looking for their first points of the season and might have got something from this match with a little more luck and better finishing against a good Rutland side. Their efforts included a penalty stroke from Ian Kennedy that had so little power it was reported that the keeper had to walk forward to save it. It is going to be a tough season for the 6th XI but they continue to play with spirit and enthusiasm which augurs well for a better result or two in the next few weeks.

Norwich Exiles Vets 5 v 0 City of Peterborough Vets 2009-10-31 14:00
No Venue | NE14Hockey East Men's Vets League (Mens Vets) | Match Report(s)
City Vets "travelling" XI faced a trip to Norwich with some trepidation having the minimum of resources again and facing an Exiles side that had put 12 past Bedford in their previous home game. However, the damage limitation exercise with an experimental formation was a partial success with a score of 0-0 after the first quarter and only 2 - 0 down at half time being considered an achievement. With the "strike force" of Wadsworth and Lake causing the Exiles defence only minor concerns, it was left to the rest of the team to strive manfully to keep the score to manageable proportions. This was achieved thanks to excellent displays at the back from Dave Hiles in goal and Neil Collcott at sweeper with the tireless running of man of the match Alastair Bradley and Rob Houghton also make an important contribution. Look out Ipswich away in 2 weeks time!
Note also that:
Adam Wilson represented the club at the U16 age group matches over the weekend playing for the Tigers ended up winning 5 -1 vs. Pumas (Adam scored 1, NOT on the reverse!), drew 2 - 2 with Leopards and lost 2 - 3 to Lynx to end up as runners up. It was a great experience for all of the players despite the monsoon on Sunday morning and hopefully next year we will have more juniors treading the same path either to Futures Cup or HiPac weekends.
